In the 1984 documentary In Search of Excellence, Steve Jobs drew a sharp contrast between professional managers and the best managers.

Jobs explained that hiring professional managers often backfired-they didn’t truly understand how things worked and lacked the vision needed to drive innovation. He referred to them bluntly as “bozos.”

In contrast, the best managers are contributors first-they deeply understand the work, make impactful decisions, and naturally evolve into great leaders. These are the individuals who elevate a company’s success and shape its future.
