Controversy and Reliability
In May 2025, Fortune reported that Grok, the chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, had begun inserting unprompted references to a "white genocide" in South Africa into answers unrelated to the topic—such as those about video games or television networks . Grok later attributed this to an internal directive received from its creators, which conflicted with its intended design to provide evidence-based and contextually relevant information. According to Grok, the instruction has since been removed, and affected responses have been purged.
Despite the incident, I personally still find Grok more reliable than many other large language models. While this controversy is concerning, I respect that Grok openly acknowledged the mistake and has since returned to its core function of surfacing facts with transparency. Compared to other LLMs that often avoid controversial topics or hide bias through evasive phrasing, Grok frequently offers real-time fact checks on X posts. With one click, it will break down the factual accuracy of a viral tweet—often clarifying that only three out of ten claimed facts are valid—providing value by challenging echo chambers rather than reinforcing them.
