Garnet Harper

In 2023, Garnet Harper, a small business owner in Sudbury, Ontario, died after being denied a kidney transplant. Harper was not vaccinated against COVID-19, and under Ontario healthcare policy at the time, COVID-19 vaccination was required to be eligible for transplant surgery.

Following his death, Harper's family was approached by the Trillium Gift of Life Network to ask whether his organs could be donated. This development prompted widespread public outcry online, where many viewed the situation as tragically ironic: a man deemed ineligible to receive a transplant was, in death, considered suitable to donate his own organs.

The incident was widely shared on social media. A 2025 Facebook Reel by Mario4thenorth captured public sentiment and concluded with the statement:

We can never allow this tyranny to happen again.
