Public Mobile is a Canadian prepaid wireless carrier owned by Telus that operates on the Telus network. It offers affordable, no-contract plans with 5G access, eSIM support, and a self-serve model. It is currently my carrier of choice.

Why Public Mobile

Free Call Forwarding

A key advantage of Public Mobile over Telus Mobility is that call forwarding is included for free with unlimited minutes to any Canadian number. By contrast, Telus Mobility charges $5/month for call forwarding (with a 3,000-minute cap and $0.75 per additional minute). For anyone who relies on call forwarding — particularly for routing calls through AI voice agents or managing multiple numbers — this is a significant cost and flexibility advantage.

No Contracts

All plans are prepaid with no contracts or commitments. You can change or cancel your plan at any time through the app.

Telus Network

Despite being a budget carrier, Public Mobile runs on the full Telus network, providing the same 5G coverage across Canada. Speeds are capped at 250 Mbps on 5G.

US and Mexico Roaming

Many plans include data roaming in the US and Mexico at no additional cost.

Public Points

Public Points are loyalty rewards earned simply by being a subscriber. Points can be redeemed to lower monthly payments or purchase add-ons.

Plans

Plans range from $20 to $50/month (as of early 2026):

  • $20/month — 500 MB data (entry-level)
  • $35/month — 30GB/50GB Canada-US plan (promotional)
  • $40/month — 100 GB data (best value)

Plans include unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting. After the data allotment is used, speeds are reduced to 512 Kbps.

Note: As of April 2026, some lower-tier plans are seeing a $4/month price increase.

eSIM Support

Public Mobile supports eSIM activation, allowing setup in minutes directly through the app without a physical SIM card.
