Referendum on Tax Hikes
Interesting reel from Mario Zelaya about an interesting idea from Pierre Poilievre who has pledged to introduce a “Taxpayer Protection Act” mandating that any new tax or tax increase must be approved by a national referendum—not just passed by politicians. His campaign frames this as taxpayer protection, requiring new spending to be offset by cuts elsewhere.

It's sort of reminds me of Warren Buffett's idea to “end the deficit in five minutes” by passing a law that disqualifies current lawmakers from re-election if the federal deficit exceeds 3% of GDP. I mean, it might not be as bold as this, although apparently buffet meant this more like a joke, even small measures to increase the checks and balances I think can go a long way.
