The term "wolf vicar," when used in ecological contexts, usually refers to a species that fills a similar ecological niche to another species in a different geographical location. In the case of the Thylacine (Thylacinus cynocephalus), often known as the Tasmanian tiger or Tasmanian wolf, it is referred to as the "wolf vicar" because it occupied a similar ecological role in Australia and Tasmania as wolves did in the Northern Hemisphere.
